How Long Does It Take to Recover From the Flu?

So, you came down with influenza. We are sorry you are feeling sick! Even if you take all of the proper precautions like getting your flu shot, eating healthy and sleeping well, there is always the chance you still will get sick.

We want you to feel better and avoid spreading it around to your friends or family. Our AFC Urgent Care Sevierville team explains what to expect from this year’s flu virus below, so keep reading!

How Is the Flu Different From a Cold?

Viral infections like the flu and the common cold often start out with similar symptoms like a runny nose, cough or a sore throat. While you might not think much of it at the start, keep an eye on these symptoms.

What sets the flu apart from a cold is how quickly these symptoms set in and progress. With a cold, they tend to appear gradually within a couple of days. When you have the flu, you will start to feel really sick almost instantly. You could develop a fever, the chills or sweats all at once.

Signs of Influenza

  • Fever
  • Runny nose/congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Muscle or body aches

What Do I Do to Treat the Flu?

Unfortunately, influenza is a viral infection that just has to run its course. While there are antiviral drugs out there for people in higher risk categories, the best way to handle this virus is to head home, get plenty of rest and drink a lot of water.

It is important to stay home while you are feeling ill! Influenza is really contagious, so you don’t want to be spreading it around. Lay low and treat your symptoms with OTC medication if desired. You can expect to feel better within about a week or so, though more persistent symptoms like a lingering cough may stick around for a bit longer.

Skip These Things When You Are Sick

  • Alcohol and caffeine
  • Hard-to-digest foods like heavy grains or greasy foods
  • Sugary foods or drinks
  • Outings in public, like to work or to school
