Why Should I Wear a Mask?- AFC Urgent Care

Wearing a mask is a new reality for almost all of us. With the coronavirus here to stay indefinitely, masking up is an important step that we can all take to help slow the spread of the virus. While it may not feel like you’re doing much when you’re wearing one in public, you actually are, and our team at AFC Urgent Care Sevierville explains why below.

How Do Masks Work?

Masks work as a simple barrier to prevent respiratory droplets from traveling into the air when you sneeze, cough or deeply exhale. This helps cut down on the amount of potential viral germs that could linger in the air. Studies have shown that COVID-19 mainly spreads among people who are in close contact with one another, so the use of masks is particularly important in settings where people are close to each other or where social distancing is difficult to execute.

Instances in Which You Should Wear a Mask

  • In large crowds or out in public
  • Around small children, pregnant women and the elderly
  • When it’s difficult to social distance

Can I Observe Other Health Precautions Besides Wearing a Mask?

Technically, yes, but hundreds of studies have shown that wearing a mask paired with those other health precautions such as frequent handwashing, hand sanitizing and social distancing is the best way to slow the spread of the virus. The CDC strongly recommends wearing a mask when at all possible as it’s one of the easiest and most effective ways to decrease the amount of lingering viral germs.

Other Health Precautions to Take Alongside Wearing a Mask

  • Frequently washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Staying home if you feel sick
  • Using hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol when soap and water aren’t available
  • Avoiding large crowds or events when possible
  • Maintaining six feet of social distance between those who aren’t your immediate family
